Protein Powder

Do You Need Protein Powder?

You don't need a bunch of scientists in white lab coats to tell you that individuals who regularly lift weights or do cardio need more protein than your average person. Unfortunately, a lot of misconceptions exist about how much protein body sculptors should consume.

Protein is one of the key macronutrients, along with carbohydrates and fat. In conjunction with hard training and exercise, protein provides many benefits: it increases lean body mass, enhances immune function and limits post-workout muscle breakdown.

Researchers recommend around .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily. An active 200lb man should ideally consume between 160 and 200 grams of protein over five to six meals throughout the day. This is significantly higher than the Government's Recommended Daily Allowance of .4 grams of protein per pound of body weight, which would equate to an insufficient 80 grams of protein for the 200lb man.

So what foods do you get your protein from? If you're trying to get all your daily protein from cheese sandwiches, you're doing yourself a disservice. It's important to consume high-quality proteins, such as whey, egg whites and lean meats. Protein powders and bars are also good choices and very convenient sources of protein.

Protein is a key component of a healthy diet and exercise program, so be sure you're making the most of your efforts in the gym by getting enough protein on a daily basis.
